IV. Parking Areas

A. Parking Space: A legal parking space is an area in a parking lot, or along the side of a street block or roadway, that is bounded by two or more painted white lines and/or a concrete bumper block. Spaces in gravel parking areas are designated solely by the presence of a concrete bumper block designating parking rows.

B. Handicapped Parking Space: A handicapped parking space is an area in a parking lot, or along the side of a street or roadway, that is bounded by two or more painted lines and/or a concrete bumper block. These spaces may also be indicated by one or more of the following: international handicapped symbol painted within the lines and a vertically placed sign displaying the international handicapped symbol. Hash marks painted between lines are part of the handicapped parking space.

C. Faculty/Staff Parking Areas: Parking lots B, C, D, E, H, and J are designated as faculty/staff lots and can be found on the campus map. No one other than faculty and staff may park in these lots between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. (During night-time hours between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m., Monday through Thursday, all lots are open and accessible with any valid NKU parking permit or temporary permit.) Weekend parking between 4:30 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Monday is open parking and a NKU parking permit is not required.

D. Student Parking Areas: Parking lots F, I, L, L/P, M, P, Q, R, and U are designated as student lots and can be found on the campus map. No one other than students may park in these lots between 7am and 6pm, Monday through Friday. (During night-time hours between 6pm and 7am, Monday through Thursday, all lots are open and accessible with any valid NKU parking permit or temporary permit.) Weekend parking between 4:30pm Friday and 7am Monday is open parking and a NKU parking permit is not required.

E. Open Parking Area: Parking lots G, K, O, S, T, and X are designated as open lots and can be found on the campus map. Anyone, Faculty/Staff, Student, or Visitor, can park with a valid NKU parking permit in an open parking lot.

F. Visitor Parking Areas: Visitors are encouraged to park in lots V or W. However, visitor lots also require courtesy parking permits which are issued at the Information Booth or Parking Offices.

G. Motorcycle Parking Areas: Motorcycles may be parked in these “motorcycle only areas” or in any regular space, except reserved spaces, based on the operator’s classification.

H. Reserved Parking Areas: Some individuals or departments on campus are assigned reserved spaces. These are

  1. Specific University Officials – These spaces are located throughout campus. Only the individual stated on the signs may park in these spaces. Illegally parked vehicles may be towed.
  2. Student Housing – Student Housing staff work and reside in designated student housing facilities. As such they are provided a reserved space at the facility in which they reside.

I. Changes to Parking Areas: Changes to parking areas will be made due to the start-up of construction projects, low usage by the classification assigned to a parking area, or unforeseen circumstances. Any changes to be made will be announced in The Northerner, Mid-Week, in local and area newspapers, or on the Public Safety Department’s web page.
